The Liao Dynasty was formed by the nomadic Khitan tribes from the north in present day Manchuria region and Inner Mongolian region of China. The Khitan adopted Chinese dynastic name of Liao following its conquest over the Tang Dynasty in 907AD. Liao coins are modeled after Song Dynasty coins but were cruder in quality, uneven casting and inscriptions on the coins are of poor calligraphy unlike the coins from the Song Dynasty.
