Han Dynasty Coins. BC206B - AD220: Brief History & Highlights. Page 0
The Han Dynasty continued with the casting of Ban Liang coins which was first started during the Qin Dynasty albeit smaller in size and weight in the form of 4 zhu Ban Liang coins and 8 zhu Ban Liang coins. During the Han Dynasty, the Wu Zhu coin was commissioned during the reign of Emperor Han Wu Ti. It became the longest circulating coins in the history of China lasting about 739 years till it was finally withdrawn during the Tang Dynasty in 618AD. The Han Wu Zhu coins were generally of very high quality displaying high level of consistency in terms of weight and size. The Elm Leaf Ban Liang was also minted during this period to replace the large heavy Qin Ban Liang which was considered to use too much bronze to produce by Han Gao Zhu. The distinctive Elm Leaf Ban Liang is small and light.
