The early coinage of Republican China reflects a period of transition from imperial to modern monetary system. The 1st cash coins of the Republic, minted in 1912, retained the traditional square hole design but featured the new era name "Ming Guo". Another Republican China coin, the Fujian Tong Bao, which also has the distinctive square hole, was minted in Fujian Province.

This is a period of massive civil war in China led by Hong Xiu Quan, who established the "Tai Ping Heavenly Kingdom". During this period, the rebels issued their own coinage comprising standard circulating coins as well as decorative & commemorative issues. Many of these rebel coins were destroyed after the rebellion was quelled, making the surviving pieces valuable collectibles.
